Urgent Situations

Urgent Scenarios
What to Do

Depending on your situation, here is what to do before or during your urgent appointment.
If you have facial swelling, fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, call emergency services or go to your nearest hospital immediately. Do not wait for a dental appointment.

Dental Abscess & Swelling

Swelling often signals infection spreading beyond the tooth. Seek urgent care if you have:

  • Rapidly increasing facial swelling
  • Fever, chills, or feeling unwell
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Swelling under the jaw or into the neck

May involve drainage, antibiotics where appropriate, and definitive care such as root canal or extraction.

Knocked-Out Tooth

  1. Pick it up by the crown, not the root.
  2. Rinse gently with saline or milk. Do not scrub.
  3. If possible, replace into the socket and bite gently on gauze.
  4. If not, store in milk or saline (or inside the cheek).
  5. Call immediately.

Best chance of saving the tooth: within 30–60 minutes.

Broken Tooth or Lost Crown

  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Keep the area clean
  • Cover sharp edges with dental wax (chemist)
  • Book urgent consultation

A broken tooth can sometimes be repaired conservatively, but if the crack reaches the nerve, urgent treatment may be required.

Emergency Wisdom Tooth Pain

Pain often comes from infection around a partially erupted tooth (pericoronitis). Symptoms may include:

  • Swelling and bad taste
  • Difficulty opening the mouth
  • Pain radiating to the ear

Treatment may include cleaning, pain relief, antibiotics if indicated, and a plan for removal if recurrent.

Severe Toothache

Intense, throbbing pain — especially at night — often means the nerve is involved. While waiting:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek
  • Avoid hot, cold, or sweet food on the affected side
  • Do not place aspirin directly on the gum

Root canal therapy or extraction may be needed to resolve the source of pain.

Bleeding That Won't Stop

Post-extraction or trauma-related bleeding that persists beyond 20 minutes needs attention.

  • Bite firmly on damp gauze or a clean cloth for 20 minutes
  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw
  • Sit upright — do not lie flat
  • Call if bleeding continues or restarts

Persistent bleeding may indicate a clotting issue or require additional sutures.

Loose or Dislodged Tooth

A tooth pushed out of alignment by trauma needs same-day care.

  • Do not try to force the tooth back into position
  • Bite gently on soft cloth to stabilise
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Call immediately for repositioning and splinting

Splinting within hours gives the best long-term prognosis for the tooth.

Lost Filling or Temporary

An exposed cavity is vulnerable to further decay and sensitivity.

  • Keep the area clean — rinse gently with warm salt water
  • Avoid chewing on that side
  • Temporary dental cement (chemist) can protect the cavity short-term
  • Book a prompt appointment to replace the restoration

Leaving a cavity exposed increases the risk of nerve involvement and deeper infection.

Dental Trauma & Sports Injury

Trauma to the mouth — from sport, falls, or accidents — requires prompt assessment, even if pain is minimal.

  • Check for loose, displaced, or missing teeth
  • Control bleeding with gentle pressure
  • Apply ice to swollen areas
  • Bring any tooth fragments in milk or saline

Internal fractures and nerve damage may not be visible but can worsen without early assessment.

Jaw Pain or Locked Jaw

Sudden jaw pain, clicking, or inability to open or close the mouth may indicate injury or disc displacement.

  • Do not force the jaw open or closed
  • Apply warm compress to the joint area
  • Eat soft foods only
  • Seek assessment if it follows trauma or persists

Early intervention can prevent chronic joint dysfunction and protect your bite.

Can I Just Take Antibiotics?

Antibiotics reduce bacterial spread, but they do not remove the cause. The source of infection must be treated directly through drainage, cleaning, or extraction. Antibiotics alone will not resolve a dental emergency. We prescribe them only when clinically appropriate as part of a complete treatment plan.

What Happens If You Delay?

Delaying emergency care can lead to infection spreading to bone and surrounding tissue, abscess formation, progressive bone loss, increased treatment complexity and cost, and a higher risk of losing the tooth entirely. Early intervention is almost always simpler, less invasive, and more affordable.

FAQs

Frequently Asked
Questions

What is considered a dental emergency?

Any condition requiring immediate attention to stop pain, save a tooth, or treat infection. Examples include severe toothache that disrupts sleep or eating, knocked-out or loose teeth, facial swelling with fever, uncontrolled bleeding, and trauma to the mouth or jaw. When in doubt, call — early assessment is safer than waiting.

Is there a 24 hour emergency dentist on the Gold Coast?

Most dental practices, including ArtSmiles, operate during standard business hours (our hours are 8:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday). If you experience a dental emergency outside these hours, call our clinic first thing in the morning for same-day priority booking. For life-threatening symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to your nearest hospital emergency department immediately.

Should I go to hospital or a dentist for tooth pain?

Go to hospital if you have difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, rapidly spreading facial swelling, high fever, or significant trauma involving a head injury. For toothache, abscess, broken teeth, or dental pain without airway compromise, a dentist with same-day availability is the more appropriate — and faster — option.

Do antibiotics cure a dental infection?

No. Antibiotics can help control the spread of bacteria, but the underlying cause — such as an infected nerve or trapped abscess — remains until it is physically treated. That is why antibiotics alone are never a long-term solution; they are one part of a broader treatment plan that may include drainage, root canal therapy, or extraction.

Can I get an emergency root canal at ArtSmiles?

Yes. If the nerve inside a tooth is infected or severely inflamed, an emergency root canal may be performed on the same day to relieve pain and save the tooth. In some cases, initial stabilisation is completed first and the full procedure is scheduled shortly after.

How much does emergency dental care cost?

Fees vary depending on the examination, imaging, diagnosis, and treatment required. An initial emergency consultation with X-rays is typically the starting point. A personalised treatment plan with transparent fees is provided before any definitive procedure begins.

What if my crown or filling falls out?

Without the restoration, the underlying tooth structure is exposed to bacteria, temperature changes, and biting forces it was not designed to withstand. While not always immediately painful, the longer the tooth remains unprotected the greater the risk of deeper decay or fracture. Temporary dental cement from a chemist can help in the short term, but a prompt appointment is important.

Is emergency dental treatment painful?

Emergency treatment is designed to relieve pain, not cause it. Local anaesthetic ensures comfort during any procedure. Most patients report significant relief once the source of pressure or infection is addressed.

Where is ArtSmiles located for emergency dental visits?

ArtSmiles is located at Shop 4, 45–49 Nind Street, Southport QLD 4215 — centrally positioned for patients from Bundall, Benowa, Labrador, Surfers Paradise, Ashmore, Main Beach, and the wider Gold Coast. Street parking and public transport access are available nearby.

Do you offer same-day emergency appointments in Southport?

Yes. ArtSmiles is open Monday to Thursday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm and Friday 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. Urgent cases are triaged by severity — pain, swelling, trauma, and bleeding receive priority. Calling early in the morning gives you the best chance of a same-day slot.

What should I do if I need an after-hours emergency dentist?

If your dental emergency occurs after hours, manage pain with over-the-counter relief, apply a cold compress for swelling, and avoid hot or cold foods on the affected side. Call ArtSmiles at 8:30 am the next business day — we reserve same-day capacity each morning for urgent cases so you can be seen promptly. For life-threatening symptoms such as facial swelling spreading to your neck, trouble breathing, or uncontrolled bleeding, go to the Gold Coast University Hospital emergency department in Southport without delay.

Can a tooth infection become dangerous?

Yes. A dental abscess can spread into the jaw, neck, or bloodstream if left untreated. Warning signs include increasing swelling, fever, feeling unwell, and difficulty opening your mouth. Prompt treatment — typically drainage, antibiotics where appropriate, and definitive care — significantly reduces risk.

How soon should I see a dentist for a knocked-out tooth?

Time is the biggest factor — the periodontal ligament cells on the root surface begin to die within minutes of drying out. Keeping the tooth moist (in milk, saline, or saliva) preserves those cells and gives the dentist the best chance of successful reimplantation. After about 60 minutes outside the socket, survival rates drop significantly.

Can I get an emergency tooth extraction on the Gold Coast?

Yes. When a tooth is too damaged or infected to be saved, same-day extraction may be the safest option to prevent further complications. After extraction, we discuss replacement options such as dental implants, bridges, or other solutions tailored to your situation.

Can I wait a few days with tooth pain?

Tooth pain rarely resolves on its own. What starts as mild discomfort can progress to irreversible nerve damage or a spreading abscess within days. Early intervention is usually simpler, less invasive, and more cost-effective than treating a condition that has been allowed to worsen.

Can a cracked tooth be saved?

It depends on the location and depth of the crack. Superficial cracks can often be restored with a crown. If the fracture reaches the nerve, root canal treatment may be needed first. Teeth split below the gum line may not be restorable, and extraction with an implant plan may be recommended.

Do you treat new patients for dental emergencies?

Absolutely. Emergency care at ArtSmiles is available to both existing and new patients. We perform a structured assessment, explain the diagnosis clearly, and outline your treatment options before proceeding.
