What Happens When
a Tooth Is Missing?
- – Shifting of neighbouring teeth — adjacent teeth may slowly move into the space
- – Changes in bite pressure — other teeth absorb additional force
- – Bone loss — the jawbone in that area may gradually lose volume
- – Altered chewing efficiency — function can become uneven
- – Aesthetic imbalance — gaps may affect smile symmetry

Frequently Asked
Questions
What are the main options for replacing a missing tooth?
The most common tooth replacement options are dental implants, dental bridges, All-on-4 (All on X) full-arch restorations, and overdentures. Each approach suits a different clinical situation. An implant is a standalone titanium post that replaces the root; a bridge anchors to neighbouring teeth; All-on-4 supports a full arch on four to six implants; and an overdenture clips onto implants for improved stability over a traditional denture. Your dentist at ArtSmiles Southport will recommend the most appropriate option after a clinical and radiographic evaluation.
What is the difference between a dental bridge and an implant?
An implant replaces the root and crown independently, without affecting neighbouring teeth, and helps maintain jawbone volume. A bridge spans the gap by anchoring to the teeth on either side, which need to be reshaped to accept crowns. Bridges do not prevent bone loss under the pontic (false tooth) and place additional load on the supporting teeth. When bone and health allow, an implant is generally the more conservative option.
What is All-on-4 and who is it suitable for?
All-on-4 (also called All on X) is a full-arch implant solution where a complete set of fixed teeth is supported by four to six implants per arch. It suits patients who have lost most or all teeth, or who face extensive tooth loss across an arch. The prosthesis is fixed in place — it does not come in and out — and avoids the need for a separate implant for every missing tooth.
Can I get an implant years after losing a tooth?
Yes, implants can be placed long after a tooth has been lost. However, delayed replacement often means some degree of bone resorption has occurred. In those cases, bone grafting may be recommended before implant placement to rebuild adequate volume. The longer the gap has existed, the more planning may be required.
Is dental implant surgery painful?
Implant placement is performed under local anaesthetic and most patients report less discomfort than expected. Mild swelling and soreness in the days following surgery are normal and typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. We explain what to expect before and after every procedure so you feel informed and prepared.
What happens if I leave a missing tooth untreated?
The jawbone beneath a missing tooth loses volume over time because it no longer receives stimulation from a root — a process called resorption. Opposing teeth may over-erupt into the space, and the bite can gradually shift, making future tooth replacement more complex and costly. Early planning generally leads to simpler treatment with more predictable results.
Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants on the Gold Coast?
Suitability depends on jawbone density, gum health and overall medical status. Patients with insufficient bone may benefit from grafting before implant placement. Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smoking can affect healing and are discussed during your consultation at ArtSmiles. A CBCT scan and clinical examination are used to confirm whether implants are viable for your situation.
Can a missing tooth be replaced on the same day it is extracted?
In some cases an implant can be placed immediately after extraction — known as immediate implant placement. This depends on the condition of the surrounding bone, the presence of infection, and the location of the tooth. Your dentist will determine at the time of extraction whether immediate placement is appropriate or whether a healing period is needed first.
How long do dental implants last?
With proper care, dental implants can last 15 to 25 years or more — some remain functional for a lifetime. The crown attached to the implant may need replacing after 10 to 15 years due to normal wear. Longevity is influenced by oral hygiene, bite forces, smoking and regular professional maintenance.
What is the cheapest way to replace a missing tooth?
A removable partial denture is typically the most affordable tooth replacement option. Dental bridges sit in the mid-range, while implants have a higher upfront cost but often represent better value over time because they preserve bone and do not require modification of healthy neighbouring teeth. At ArtSmiles we discuss all options, including flexible payment plans, so you can choose a solution that fits your budget.
