Post-Operative Instructions for Periodontal Flap Surgery

Support Gum Healing with Proper Aftercare

Periodontal flap surgery is performed to clean deep areas of infection, reduce pocket depth, and regenerate healthy gum tissue. At ArtSmiles, your recovery is important to the long-term success of the treatment. Please follow these instructions carefully.

Immediately After Surgery

Bleeding: Slight bleeding or oozing for up to 24 hours is normal. Bite gently on gauze if needed.

Swelling: Apply an ice pack on the outside of the cheek (10 min on, 10 min off) for the first 24–48 hours.

Rest: Avoid physical activity for the first 48 hours. Keep your head elevated while lying down or sleeping.

Pain & Sensitivity Management

Take all prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications as directed.

Begin pain relief before the anaesthesia wears off to reduce discomfort.

Avoid alcohol and smoking, especially while on medication.

Dietary Tips

Soft diet for 5–7 days (e.g., mashed vegetables, scrambled eggs, pasta, soup).

Avoid crunchy, spicy, hot, or acidic foods.

Do not use straws or disturb the area with your tongue.

Oral Hygiene

Do not brush the surgical area for the first 7–10 days.

Use a prescribed antimicrobial mouth rinse (e.g., chlorhexidine) starting 24 hours after surgery.

Continue brushing and flossing untouched areas as normal.

Avoid

Smoking or vaping for at least 72 hours (ideally 7 days).

Vigorous rinsing.

What to Expect

Minor swelling or bleeding when brushing is normal during the healing period.

Gums may appear to recede slightly as inflammation decreases and pockets tighten.

Regular maintenance cleanings and home care are critical to long-term results.

Gum tissue may appear red or slightly inflamed during early healing.

You’ll return for a post-op review within 1–2 weeks.
