Post-Operative Instructions for Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

How to Care for Your Gums After Periodontal Treatment

Deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a non-surgical treatment that removes plaque and calculus from below the gumline to help stop gum disease. After this procedure, it’s important to follow the instructions below to reduce sensitivity, promote healing, and protect your gums.

Immediately After Treatment

You may experience tenderness, mild bleeding, or gum sensitivity for 24–72 hours.

Avoid eating until the numbness completely wears off to prevent accidental injury.

Stick to soft, cool foods for the first day.

Pain & Sensitivity Management

Take over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or paracetamol as needed.

Start pain relief before the numbness wears off to stay ahead of discomfort.

If sensitivity occurs, try using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth for at least 2 weeks.

Avoid very cold, hot, or spicy foods for a few days.

Dietary Tips

For the first 24 hours, avoid:

  • Crunchy or abrasive foods (e.g., chips, popcorn)

  • Acidic foods and beverages (e.g., citrus fruits, soda)

  • Alcohol and smoking

Oral Hygiene

Brush and floss gently but thoroughly to keep the area clean.

You may be prescribed a medicated mouth rinse—use it as directed to reduce bacteria and inflammation.

Rinse with warm salt water (1 tsp salt in a cup of warm water) 2–3 times daily to soothe the gums.

Avoid

Smoking or vaping for at least 72 hours (ideally 7 days).

Vigorous rinsing.

What to Expect

Minor swelling or bleeding when brushing is normal during the healing period.

Gums may appear to recede slightly as inflammation decreases and pockets tighten.

Regular maintenance cleanings and home care are critical to long-term results.
