Post-Operative Instructions for Veneers, Crown or Bridge Preparation

Caring for Your Temporary Crown or Bridge

After your tooth is prepared for a crown or bridge, a temporary restoration is placed to protect it until the final one is ready. While temporary crowns look and feel natural, they are not as strong or precisely fitted as your permanent crown. Follow these instructions to keep the temporary secure and your tooth protected.

What to Expect

Mild sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is common. This will improve once your final crown or bridge is fitted.

Avoid chewing on the temporary for the first 30 minutes to allow the cement to set.

You may feel slight pressure or tightness around the gums—this is normal.

Eating Tips

Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that could loosen or damage the temporary (e.g., gum, toffee, nuts).

Chew on the opposite side of your mouth if possible.

Avoid very hot or cold foods if you’re experiencing sensitivity.

Cleaning Instructions

Brush gently around the temporary with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Do not use electric toothbrush.

You may not be able to floss, as the temporary teeth may be connected. Use waterflosser instead, in a lower power.

Rinse with warm salt water if the gums are tender.

If the Temporary Comes Off

Don’t panic. Temporaries can occasionally come loose.

If it comes off, keep the crown and call us as soon as possible to have it re-cemented.

Do not try to glue it back yourself.

Next Steps

Your final veneer, crown or bridge will typically be ready within 2–3 weeks.

It’s important to attend your scheduled appointment to avoid long-term sensitivity or shifting of teeth.
